KAMAMESHI

Kamameshi is a traditional Japanese rice dish cooked in an iron pot.

· FOOD

Kama literally means an iron pot. Meshi literally means rice. Rice in an iron pot is cooked with condiments and ingredients. Common condiments are soy sauce, mirin, liquor etc. There are many main ingredients used, such as chicken, beef, pork, salmon, eel, shrimp, etc. I ate very rare kamameshi in a restaurant. The name of the kamameshi in the picture is tomato kamameshi. A tomato is put on rice in an iron pot. We eat it after mixing. The taste is like rice with tomato sauce. Some kinds of kamameshi are served at train stations for travelers. I recommend trying kamameshi during your travel in Japan.
