Some Japanese foods are influenced by European countries. About 150 years ago, many European people worked as a trader in Japan and some Japanese chefs cooked European foods, omurice, croquette, curry rice, deep-fried prawn etc for them. We call them Yoshoku against Washoku, Japanese originated food. Omurice is one of yoshoku consisting of an omelette and fried rice. It is usually topped with ketchup. Omurice is the word created by the combination between omelette and rice. It is very popular for many people especially children. There are some restaurants which are specialized in omurice. The omurice in the picture is cooked by my wife and topped with demi-glace sauce.
