· CULTURE

Setsubun literally means the day between two seasons but we usually use the word Setsubun as the last day of winter and the day before the spring season. Setsubun is the 3rd of February. On the present calendar, the 3rd of February is called the last day of winter but February is in winter on the actual season and the coldest month in a year. When we talk about the four seasons, we have two kinds of four seasons. Traditional events are conducted in calendar days. We have several traditional events in Setsubun. The other one is based on the actual weather conditions of the environment, the temperature and seasonal wind. Depending on the actual weather conditions, Hokkaido has a longer winter than other regions.
